Impact of Interest Rates: How Changes in the Fed’s Policy Affect Your Portfolio

One of the most significant factors affecting financial markets is the Federal Reserve’s decisions regarding interest rates. The Fed’s actions have a direct impact on a wide range of investments, including bonds, stocks, and retirement savings. Understanding how these changes affect your portfolio is crucial for making informed decisions and adjusting your strategy accordingly.

How Interest Rates Influence the Market

Interest rate changes can affect the economy in various ways, with notable impacts on different asset classes. When the Federal Reserve raises or lowers rates, it influences everything from borrowing costs to investment returns. Here’s how interest rate changes typically affect key areas of your portfolio:

  1. Bonds and Fixed-Income Investments

When interest rates rise, the value of existing bonds typically falls. This happens because newly issued bonds offer higher yields, making older bonds with lower yields less attractive to investors. Conversely, when interest rates fall, the value of existing bonds generally rises, as they offer higher yields than newly issued bonds.

  • What to do: If you hold bonds in your portfolio, consider reviewing their maturity dates and interest rate sensitivity. Shorter-duration bonds tend to be less affected by rate changes, while longer-duration bonds can be more volatile. If you’re concerned about rising rates, consider adjusting your bond allocation or focusing on bonds with shorter maturities.

  1. Stocks and Equities

Interest rate changes can also impact the stock market. When rates rise, borrowing costs increase for companies, which can lead to lower profits and slower growth. On the other hand, when interest rates decline, borrowing becomes cheaper, and businesses may benefit from easier access to capital, potentially boosting stock prices.

  • What to do: Pay attention to the sectors that are most sensitive to interest rate changes. Diversification is key to ensuring your portfolio includes a mix of stocks from various sectors that can help balance the risks.

  1. Retirement Savings Accounts (401(k), IRAs, etc.)

Changes in interest rates can also impact the growth of your retirement accounts. For instance, rising rates can make bonds less attractive, potentially leading investors to shift their focus toward stocks or other assets. Additionally, higher interest rates may provide better returns for cash savings or money market accounts, which could influence how you allocate your retirement savings.

  • What to do: Take this opportunity to revisit your asset allocation within retirement accounts. If you’re concerned about rate hikes, it may make sense to adjust your exposure to bonds or more interest-sensitive assets.

Strategies to Adapt to Changing Interest Rates

Given the current economic environment, here are a few strategies to consider as you adjust your portfolio in response to interest rate changes:

  1. Rebalance Your Portfolio: Periodically reassessing your portfolio and making adjustments to your asset allocation can help mitigate the risks associated with interest rate changes. If you haven’t already, now might be a good time to rebalance your portfolio to ensure it aligns with your current goals and market conditions.
  2. Focus on Quality Bonds: Bonds can be affected by interest changes.
  3. Diversify Across Sectors and Asset Classes: Interest rate changes can have varied effects on different sectors and asset classes. Maintaining a diversified portfolio with exposure to different sectors and asset classes (stocks, bonds, cash) can help reduce the impact of rate fluctuations on your portfolio.
  4. Stay Focused on Your Long-Term Goals: While interest rate changes may create short-term volatility, it’s important to stay focused on your long-term financial goals. Avoid reacting impulsively to short-term market movements. If you’re uncertain about how rate changes affect your strategy, we’re here to provide guidance and ensure your plan stays on track.

Golf Tip of the Week

Mastering Your Backswing

Many golfers focus heavily on their downswing, but according to David Leadbetter, one of Golf Digest’s Legends of Golf Instruction, the real key starts much earlier.

“Most flaws in the downswing happen because players are trying to recover from a poor backswing,” Leadbetter explains.

By learning to take the club back properly, you can set yourself up for more consistent, powerful shots.

The Proper Backswing

Leadbetter emphasizes two critical elements:

  • Coil Your Upper Body: Turn your upper body against a relatively stable lower body (your hips can rotate slightly). This coiling creates synchronicity and power.
  • Maintain Swing Radius: Keeping the club on a wide arc helps you strike the ball solidly without needing last-second adjustments in your downswing.

When these fundamentals break down, golfers often find their arms collapsing or their torso failing to rotate correctly.

The Fitness Connection

Sometimes, a poor backswing isn’t just about technique. Ben Shear, Golf Digest’s Chief Fitness Advisor, explains that weakness in the rotator and extensor muscles of the torso can be a major factor.

“These muscles work diagonally—from the left hip to the right shoulder during the backswing, and the opposite direction during the follow-through,” Shear says.

The problem? Many golfers spend their days sitting with poor posture, making it harder for these muscles to function properly in the swing.

Fix It: The Reverse Chop Exercise

Shear recommends an exercise called the Reverse Chop, demonstrated by LPGA Tour player Ryann O’Toole.

  • What it does: Trains your rotator and extensor muscles to move in the correct diagonal pattern for both the backswing and follow-through.
  • How to do it: Perform the movement in both directions to build balance and reinforce proper swing mechanics.

Adding this exercise to your routine can improve your ability to coil and maintain your swing width—setting you up for a better backswing and a more powerful, repeatable swing overall.

  • 2 tsp fresh lemon juice

Batter:

  • 4 tbsp (½ stick) unsalted butter
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour

  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup milk, at room temperature

  2. Preheat oven: Place the butter in a 2-quart baking dish and set it in the oven while it preheats to 350°F.

Travel Tip of the Week

Europe’s Cleanest Coastal Waters

If you’re planning a European beach vacation, two countries just earned the top spot for the cleanest coastal waters on the continent—and they may not be the first destinations you’d expect!

The Report

The European Environment Agency (EEA), in collaboration with the European Commission, recently released its 2024 European Bathing Water Assessment. The results ranked Slovenia and Lithuania as tied for first place for the cleanest coastal waters in Europe.

The study reviewed 22,127 sites across the EU, Albania, and Switzerland, testing beaches, rivers, lakes, and swimming areas for bacterial contamination.

  • 85% of all sites met the “excellent” standard for water quality.
  • 96% met at least the minimum safety standards.
  • Coastal waters were generally cleaner than inland waters.

This evaluation comes as part of the EU Bathing Water Directive established in 2006.

Slovenia & Lithuania: Small but Mighty

While Slovenia and Lithuania had fewer locations tested—21 and 16 respectively—they earned perfect marks across the board.

  • Slovenia: Famous for its 29 miles of Adriatic coastline and the stunning seaside town of Piran, it also recently announced a digital nomad visa launching in November 2025, allowing remote workers to live there for up to a year.
  • Lithuania: Known for its Baltic gems—Palanga, Neringa, and Klaipeda—the country was also ranked the happiest place in the world for people under 30 in 2024, according to the World Happiness Report.

For comparison, Croatia topped the list in 2024 with 894 coastal sites tested, but this year’s title belongs to these two smaller coastal champions.

“The results … show that Europeans can confidently bathe in the vast majority of the EU’s bathing sites that meet the EU’s bathing quality standards,” said Jessika Roswall, Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience, and a Competitive Circular Economy.

In short: if you’re looking for crystal-clear, swimmable waters—and a unique travel experience—Slovenia and Lithuania should be on your radar.
